Introducing Chey Designs debut collection Wasuwegl Nigwegl
I present to you my debut collection, the start of many more collections to come.
Wasuwegl Nigwegl, loosely translates to mean “growing flowers” in the Mi’gmaq language. My inspiration for this collection was from the natural growth of flowers. As an Indigenous woman, it’s been challenging to grow in uncomfortable spaces and settings that largely centre Western ways of knowing and Eurocentric beauty standards. This collection is an act of resistance against this. A showcase of indigenous perspective, art and beauty.
Magic happens when women support each other. Like flowers, no woman is superior or more beautiful than another. Each of us have our own unique beauty.
To sum it up, I hope this collection inspires us to be supportive of one another, empower each other, create sisterhoods and develop systems of support and change together.
There is enough room for all of us.
